# How Much Does Brand Photography Cost?

12 min read
![Beauty campaign shoot on a seamless backdrop, the setup behind most brand photography cost estimates](https://c-istudios.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kiss-kiss-usa-international-01.webp)

Two photographers can quote the same brand shoot at four thousand dollars and sixteen thousand dollars, shoot the same number of frames on the same day, and both be quoting honestly. The gap is almost never the photography. It is what you are allowed to do with the pictures afterward. Brand photography cost is a licensing question wearing a production question's clothes, and reading a quote without knowing that is how marketing teams end up comparing numbers that were never comparable. Every number below is a US industry average for what American brands pay. None of it is a rate card, ours or anyone else's.

## A brand photography cost is three numbers, not one

A brand photography cost is priced differently from most creative work because the deliverable keeps having value after it is made. A finished photograph can run on a website for a year or on a billboard in twelve markets for three, and those two futures are worth wildly different amounts to the brand buying them. So a real quote splits into three parts that have almost nothing to do with each other.

Part of the quote
What it pays for
Share of a typical US brand shoot

Creative fee
The photographer's time, eye and direction on the day
25 to 40 percent

Production
Crew, studio, talent, styling, props, equipment, permits
30 to 50 percent

Licensing
Where the images run, for how long, and how exclusively
15 to 45 percent

Every figure on this page is a US market average drawn from what American brands pay across the industry rather than a price list. Any brand photography cost quoted as a flat number with no split is either bundling all three or has quietly assumed a license far narrower than you think you are buying. Ask for the breakdown before you compare anything.

## Usage rights are the half of the price nobody reads

This is the part that surprises people, and it is the single biggest swing factor in any brand photography cost. It is why two quotes for one shoot can read like quotes for two different jobs. A photographer is not selling you files. They are selling you a license to use those files in specified places for a specified time, and the price scales with how much of the world you want.

### What a license actually specifies

The [American Society of Media Photographers](https://www.asmp.org/) has published guidance on this for decades and it is the closest thing the trade has to a common vocabulary. Four variables do the work. Media is where the images can appear, so organic social and your own website sit at the bottom and paid advertising, print, out of home and packaging climb steeply from there. Territory is geographic, running from one city to one country to worldwide. Duration is how long, usually one, two or three years, occasionally in perpetuity. The underlying copyright stays with the photographer unless it is explicitly assigned, which the [US Copyright Office](https://www.copyright.gov/what-is-copyright/) sets out plainly and which surprises a lot of marketing teams the first time they read a contract properly. Exclusivity is whether the photographer can license the same frames to anyone else, and buying it out costs real money because it removes their ability to resell.

Those four multiply rather than add. Web only, US, one year, non exclusive is the cheap corner of the grid. Full media, worldwide, three years, exclusive is the expensive corner, and the same shoot day can sit at either end.

What you want to do with the images
Typical effect on the licensing line

Own website and organic social, 1 year
Baseline, often folded into the creative fee

Add paid social and digital ads, 1 year
Roughly 25 to 60 percent on top of the baseline

Add print, catalog and in store, 2 years
Roughly 50 to 150 percent on top

Add out of home, national, 2 to 3 years
Often doubles the licensing line or more

Packaging
Priced separately and usually the most expensive single use

Full buyout, worldwide, perpetuity
Commonly 2 to 4 times the base fee

Two practical points follow from this. First, buy the license you will actually use. Brands routinely pay for a worldwide three year buyout and then run the images on Instagram for eight months. Second, buy it once. Going back to extend a license after the shoot is always more expensive than including the use in the original negotiation, because you have lost the only leverage you had.

## What the shoot day itself costs

Strip licensing out and the rest of a brand photography cost behaves much more like any other shoot. It is driven by how many people are in the room and how long they are there.

### The photographer and the people assisting

A working commercial photographer's day rate across the US generally lands between $1,500 and $6,000, with editorial and portrait work at the lower end and advertising at the top. A first assistant runs $350 to $650 a day. On any shoot producing more than a handful of setups, a digital technician managing capture, tethering and color on set adds $500 to $900 and pays for itself the first time a file is not what everyone thought it was on the back of the camera.

### Everyone who is not holding a camera

This is where a brand photography cost separates from a headshot session. Hair and makeup runs $600 to $1,500 a day. A wardrobe stylist is $700 to $2,000 plus a kit fee and the cost of anything pulled. A prop stylist or food stylist sits in the same range and is the difference between a product photograph that looks considered and one that looks like inventory. A producer to run the schedule, the call sheet and the releases is $700 to $1,800.

Models are their own line. Non union talent for a brand shoot is roughly $500 to $2,500 a day, and like the photographer, their fee is tied to usage, so a model booked for social and a model booked for national out of home are not the same booking or the same price.

### The room

A studio day across the US runs $500 to $2,500 depending on size, cyc wall and grip package. Location work replaces that with scouting, permits, travel and the risk of weather, and it is usually more expensive than it looks on paper once you count the hours lost to moving. If you are deciding between the two, our comparison of [natural light against studio lighting](https://c-istudios.com/natural-lighting-vs-studio-lighting/) is a useful read first.

![Lifestyle bedding shot styled on a built set, where styling and production drive the budget](https://c-istudios.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cis-brand-photography-lifestyle-bedding-set.webp)

## Retouching is billed per image and it adds up fast

Almost every other line on a photography quote is billed by the day. Retouching is billed by the picture, which is why it is the line of a brand photography cost that most often doubles between the estimate and the invoice.

Basic color correction and clean up runs $25 to $75 an image. Standard commercial retouching, so skin, product surfaces, minor removals and consistency across a set, is $75 to $250 an image. High end beauty and product compositing, where several frames are combined or a surface is rebuilt, starts around $250 and climbs past $800 for a hero frame that will be blown up to poster size.

The arithmetic is what catches people. A shoot that produces forty selected images at $150 each is a $6,000 post budget attached to a $9,000 shoot day, and nobody discussed it because the conversation was about the day rate. Decide how many final images you actually need before you book anything. Our rundown of [photo editing practice](https://c-istudios.com/16-important-post-production-photo-editing-tips-from-a-professional-film-editor/) covers what that work involves.

## The shot count trap

Brands brief a shoot in days and receive it in images, and the mismatch between those two units drives more brand photography cost arguments than anything except licensing.

A realistic commercial day is eight to fifteen finished setups for product work and four to eight for lifestyle with talent, wardrobe changes and location moves. A brief that says a day and then lists sixty required shots is not a one day shoot, and everyone finds that out at four in the afternoon. Count the setups, not the frames. The camera fires thousands of times either way.

The corollary is the cheapest content you will buy all year. Once lights are up, talent is in the chair and the set is dressed, additional variations cost minutes rather than money. Shoot the vertical crop, the copy space version and the detail frame while everything is standing, because coming back for them later means paying for the whole day again.

![Apparel portrait on a studio seamless, the setup where extra variations cost minutes not money](https://c-istudios.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cis-brand-photography-studio-seamless-apparel.webp)

## What moves the price with nothing to do with the pictures

Three things inflate a brand photography cost without adding a single frame to the shoot, and all three are avoidable.

The first is the approval chain. A shoot signed off by one marketing lead and a shoot signed off by a committee are the same production until the selects go out. Then one of them comes back with a decision and the other comes back with four opinions and a request to reshoot a setup that was fine. Name the person who chooses the final images before the shoot, not after.

The second is compression. A brief that lands on Monday for a Friday shoot pays a premium on every line, because the crew you want is booked, the studio you want is taken, and styling has to source from whatever is available rather than whatever is right. Two extra weeks of lead time is usually worth more to the finished pictures than two extra thousand dollars of budget.

The third is shooting without a shot list. It sounds like a small omission and it is the most expensive one on this page. Without a list, the day is spent discovering what the shoot is instead of executing it, half the setups get done properly and the rest get done at speed, and the reshoot that follows costs the whole day again. A shot list is free. Write it.

There is a fourth that is not avoidable and should be planned for anyway. Outdoor work needs a weather contingency, and the honest way to handle it is to agree the cost of a hold day in the contract rather than discover it in a phone call at six in the morning.

## Four brand photography budgets, line by line

Ranges help you plan and do nothing for you in a negotiation. These are four brand photography cost builds at four scales, in the proportions the US market tends to price them. They are industry averages rather than any one company's price list, so treat them as a shape to argue with.

### Around $4,500. A team headshot and culture refresh

Line
Cost

Photographer, one day
$2,000

Assistant and lighting package
$700

Hair and makeup
$800

Retouching, 25 images
$750

Web and social license, 2 years
$250

Twenty five people through a consistent setup, plus environmental frames of the office. This is the most common brand photography purchase there is and the one most often handed to whoever owns a good camera. The gap between that and a professional result is almost entirely lighting and direction.

### Around $12,000. A product catalog

Line
Cost

Photographer, two days
$5,000

Assistant plus digital technician
$2,000

Studio and grip
$1,600

Prop styling and surfaces
$1,200

Retouching, 60 images
$1,700

Ecommerce and paid social license, 2 years
$500

Sixty products on white plus a set of styled hero frames. Catalog work rewards planning more than any other kind of photography, because the shoot is essentially a production line and every minute saved per product multiplies by sixty. Our guide to [product photography for Shopify](https://c-istudios.com/product-photography-tips-for-shopify/) covers the ecommerce end of this.

### Around $34,000. A lifestyle campaign with talent

Line
Cost

Creative fee, two shoot days plus prep
$9,000

Crew, assistants, digital technician
$3,500

Two models plus casting
$5,000

Hair, makeup and wardrobe styling
$4,000

Location, permits and production
$3,500

Retouching, 35 selects
$5,000

Paid digital and print license, US, 2 years
$4,000

Here the photograph is designed rather than captured. There is a mood board, a cast, a wardrobe and a location, and the value sits in decisions made two weeks before anyone opens a case. This is the range most brand campaigns actually live in.

### Around $85,000. A national campaign with a buyout

Line
Cost

Creative fee, three shoot days plus prep
$18,000

Full crew and production
$12,000

Cast, casting and fittings
$12,000

Styling, props and set build
$10,000

Studio, location and travel
$8,000

High end retouching, 20 heroes
$10,000

Full media buyout, worldwide, 3 years
$15,000

Notice what happens at the top of the market. The license is the largest single line, larger than the photographer, larger than the cast. At this scale you are not buying a shoot. You are buying the right to put a specific image everywhere for three years, and the shoot is how that image gets made.

## What is not in the number

A brand photography cost is only as honest as the lines it leaves out, so comparing bids means comparing the things that sit outside the headline. These are the lines that most often arrive as a surprise.

Item
Typical add
When it applies

Overtime
1.5x crew rate after 10 hours
Any day that gains setups or starts late

License extension
Often more than buying it upfront
Adding media or years after the shoot

Extra retouching rounds
$40 to $150 per image
Beyond the rounds named in the quote

Product samples and returns
Shipping plus handling
Anything shipped to a studio

Permits and location fees
$200 to $2,500
Public property and many private venues

Archive and file delivery
$200 to $1,000 a year
Keeping raw files recoverable

## Brand photography cost questions we get asked

### Why will a photographer not just sell me the raw files?

Because the raw files are not the product and releasing them removes any control over how the work is presented. Some will license raws for a fee. Most will not, and the ones who hand them over without discussion are usually the ones whose finished work needed the least of them.

### Is a day rate or a per image price better?

Per image suits small, well defined jobs where the count is genuinely fixed, so ecommerce packshots are the obvious case. Day rate suits anything creative, because the moment the brief moves, per image pricing turns every good idea into a change order.

### Can we use the photos forever?

Only if you bought that. Most licenses run one to three years, and the images do not stop working on the last day, but continuing to run them past the term is a breach that a rights holder can act on. Diary the expiry when you sign.

### Do we need a photographer and a videographer, or one crew?

One crew, almost always, if the two are shot together from the start. Stills and motion share the lighting, the talent, the location and the styling, and capturing both on the same day is dramatically cheaper than booking two productions. It has to be planned that way though, because the lighting compromises are real and they are much easier to solve in prep than at noon. Our [video production services](https://c-istudios.com/video-production-services/) page covers how we combine the two.

### What makes a brand photography cost go up the fastest?

Licensing first, cast second, shot count third. Nothing else is close. A brand that trims those three thoughtfully and spends the savings on styling and retouching ends up with better pictures for the same money.

## Working out your own number

Answer four questions before you ask anyone for a price. Where will these images run and for how long. How many finished images do you actually need. Is there anyone in frame who has to be paid. Do you need a studio or a location. Those four get you within twenty percent of a real brand photography cost and turn a set of incomparable bids into a set of comparable ones.

We shoot brand campaigns at reasonable prices, out of our own [stage in Los Angeles](https://c-istudios.com/studio-rentals/) and on location, from beauty and product work like the [KISS](https://c-istudios.com/portfolio/kiss/) campaigns through to corporate and editorial portraiture. Every estimate we send is split into the three parts described above, so you can see what you are buying instead of a single number with nothing behind it. ## One last thing about cheap photography

The cheapest brand photography cost in a set of three quotes is usually cheap for a reason that is written down somewhere in it. A narrower license, fewer retouched selects, no stylist, no producer, a shorter day. None of those are dishonest and all of them are recoverable if you spot them before you sign. Read the three parts, ask what is missing, and pick on what you are actually getting rather than on the number at the bottom. Our piece on [what brand photography does for identity](https://c-istudios.com/building-brand-identity-the-power-of-corporate-photography/) is a good reminder of what is at stake when it goes wrong.
