The Truck Decides How the Day Goes

A grip truck is one of the most vital tools in production. Logistically, you need a large vehicle to move gear to and from set. But more than that, a grip truck is preparation. It is the space to bring the just in case items, because life in production throws constant curveballs. A grip truck is one of many preventative measures that keep your production running smoothly and as prepared as possible.

The Gear Inside

Each grip truck is stocked with dedicated gear that lives on board, so we are always prepped to go. Everything is organized and designed for easy access. Each piece has a shelf where it lives. The layout is ours, so we can rearrange, add or remove whatever applies to a particular shoot without starting from scratch.

Our trucks house cable and distro, C stands and combo stands, butterfly frames and rags, flags, floppies, bead boards, apple boxes, sandbags, clamps and stingers and more. Whatever gear you need, however you need it organized, the grip truck is prepped to house it and transport it to wherever the shoot takes you.

Three Trucks Sized to the Shoot

We run three grip and electric packages and the right one is a function of the set rather than the budget. The 1 Ton covers a single location with a small crew, a 6×6 frame kit, flags and enough stands to build a two person interview without crowding the room. The 3 Ton is the working middle. It adds 8×8 frames, hi hi roller stands, a menace arm and a wall spreader, banded cable and a distro box, a Dana Dolly with track and a doorway dolly. The 7 Ton is the truck for large sets, overheads and multi location days, and it goes out of Los Angeles with camera, lenses, lighting, sound and comms on board.

Every truck leaves with a full tank and 30 complimentary miles, and every one of them is ours rather than something we sub in the week before.

The Crew Comes With the Truck

A loaded truck is only worth what the crew standing beside it can do with it. Our grips and gaffers work off these trucks every week, so nobody spends the morning learning where things live or what the truck actually carries. Rigging goes up faster, a location changes character in one move rather than five, and the day stays on schedule.

The truck can go out crewed with a C&I team or on its own, and either way the people who maintain it between jobs are the people who packed it.

Grip Trucks at C&I Studios

A grip truck is the department that makes light usable. Fixtures produce output and grip decides where that output lands, how hard it reads and what it never touches, which is why a shoot with the wrong truck on it loses hours to problems the right truck solves in minutes. C&I Studios owns its grip trucks rather than subbing them in the week before a shoot. Each one is packed to a standing list, checked back in against that list after every job and run by the same grips and gaffers who load it, so what is on the shelf on the morning of a shoot is what the call sheet assumed would be there.

Three Packages Sized to the Set

The 1 Ton covers a single location with a small crew. It carries Matthews C stands and combo stands, a 6×6 butterfly frame kit with silk solid and griffolyn rags, 4×4 diffusion frames and floppies, flag kits, apple boxes, sandbags, a full range of clamps and grip heads, stingers to 50 feet and a handheld dimmer. The 3 Ton is the working middle and adds 8×8 frames and rags, hi hi overhead roller stands, a menace arm and a wall spreader, banded cable with a 100A lunch box distro, a Dana Dolly with track, a doorway dolly and a slider. The 7 Ton is built for large sets, overheads and multi location days and rolls out of Los Angeles with camera, lenses, lighting, sound and comms aboard alongside the grip and electric.

What Rides on Every Truck

Frames run from 4×4 up to 12×12 with silks, solids, griffolyn, magic cloth and grid cloth, ultra bounce and bead board. Stands cover sliding leg and turtle base C stands, triple riser combo and beefy baby stands and low boy combos. Rigging covers cardellini and mafer clamps, scissor clamps, pony clamps, baby and junior pins, speed rail and cheeseboroughs, safety chain and suction cups. Electric covers stingers from 25 to 100 feet, cube taps, power strips, dimmers, ground lifters, a multimeter and a circuit breaker finder. Expendables ride in the toolbox where they belong, from gaff tape and paper tape to cinefoil, sash cord, wood shims and C 47s.
